Wrestling's Thom Ortiz Named Pac-10 Coach of the Year

For the second year in a row, Arizona State University Head Wrestling Coach Thom Ortiz was selected as the Pac-10 Conference Coach of the Year, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced Wednesday. The honor is the third in Ortiz' five years at the helm of the Sun Devil program and the 15th for an ASU head coach in the 31 years the conference has recognized its top coach.

Thom Ortiz is one of the most impactful figures in the history of the Sun Devil Wrestling program. As an athlete he was a three-time all-American, twice at 142-pounds (1988 &1990) and once at 150-pounds (1989). In 1988, as a member of the national title team, Ortiz won his second of three Pac-10 titles and earned All-America honors when he finished fourth at the NCAA Championships. During his senior year in 1990, Ortiz had his best finish at the NCAA Championships when he finished as the national runner-up at 142-pounds. Helped ASU finish as the national runner-up in each of his last two years. Two-time Pac-10 champion at 142-pounds as well as a conference champion at 150-pounds. Finished his career with a 118-34-2 record.

Thomas A. Ortiz is a Tucson native and attended Sunnyside High School where he began his wrestling career. He wrestled varsity from 1982-1985. During that time, he was two-time state champion, a two-time 2nd place and three-time High School All-American. He was voted most outstanding wrestler and Arizona Republic’s wrestler of the year.
